Merry Christkwanzanukkahmas!
Have we become so politically correct that we have to utter "Have a good holiday," or "Seasons Greetings" out of respect for non-Christians? If you are Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Agnostic, or other, Christmas was never intended for you to celebrate. Not that I or any Christian would wish to exclude you. We welcome you annually to our celebration with open arms.
Christmas has become a secular holiday as well. Its traditions have been evolving since the word Christian came to be. Early Christians did not await the coming of Santa Claus or decorate a pine tree with garland and ornaments.
These traditions have been adopted over time. In the United States we have adopted Christmas traditions from all over the world. Santa Claus is from Dutch for "Sinter Klaas" (1). The Christmas Tree is wrapped in so much myth,we can't be sure of its origin. We do know for sure that it was introduced in the US by German immigrants in the early 19th century (2).
Finally, the fact remains that most Americans are Christian (either by faith or tradition), and that our culture (and goverment) are founded primarily on Christian principals. If it was any other way, Christmas would not be the predominant holiday this time of year. That's just the way it is.
So, to my fellow Christians, I say "Merry Christmas!" and wish you all the joy, hope, and peace the birth of Christ brought to the world. To every one else, I say "Merry Christmas!" May this Christmas season bring you all the joy, hope, and peace that it brings to me.
